Conditions of Access

The Library of Dean and Chapter is normally open to researchers by prior appointment on Mondays and Tuesdays, and on Fridays in the afternoons only. Please contact the Librarian for further details of opening times and access.

It is sometimes possible to arrange for library material to be made available at other times.

The photographs in the collection are not fully catalogued, so, to locate photographs of interest please consult the Librarian.
Summary of Holdings
The collection consists of photographs of exterior and interior views of the Cathedral, these show the structure of the building and the works associated with its upkeep, also exterior and interior views of damage to the Cathedral suffered during World War II, the earliest photographs date from the 1860s to the present day.

There are also a number of formal and informal portraits of members of staff, the Dean, members of the clergy, the Librarian, Master Stone Masons, members of the St Paul’s Fire Watch which was re-formed in 1939, etc. The majority of the informal portraits depict the working life of the Cathedral of which little is seen by the public.

There are also a number of press photographs of events which take place in and outside the Cathedral, conformation ceremonies, weddings, artist’s projects, etc.

The Library also has a set of photographs from the series Society for Photographing Relics of Old London.

There are also a small number of photographs by William Strudwick, dated c.1860s, of views of St Paul’s Cathedral and other locations in London. The largest number of these can be found in the St Paul's Cathedral Collection (Dean and Chapter of St Paul's Cathedral deposit at London Metropolitan Archives). This collection is on long term loan to LMA, names of photographers and studios associated with the collection are listed under the Collection(s) section of this page. Size of Collection

The collection consists of approximately 700 photographs.
